Augmentative communication is a field of research and clinical practice focused on supplementing or replacing natural speech and/or writing for individuals with complex communication needs. It investigates the development, implementation, and evaluation of systems and strategies (including both aided and unaided methods) designed to facilitate effective expressive and receptive communication, thereby promoting participation, social interaction, and self-determination.
