The conventional optical model potential is used to analyze the p + 4 He elastic scattering data in the energy range 100–1150 MeV. Both differential cross section and polarization data are reasonably fitted. The behavior of the volume integral of the real central potential as a function of energy is studied and is found to follow the same trend observed for heavier targets. The energy dependence of the imaginary central potential is also studied. The imaginary spin–orbit term is found to be important in this energy region. In some cases, the rising backward cross section is fitted by introducing a simple real exchange potential.
