Clear evidence of encapsulation of pyranosides in the macrocycle 1 (R H, R′ Bn) was afforded by NMR and IR spectroscopic investigations of the reaction of 1 with 2 in CDCl3 and force field calculations for the methyl analogue of 2. The macrocycle is thus one of the first synthetic carbohydrate receptors. Its cavity is large enough to fix the guest molecule from all sides by oriented hydrogen bonds.
