•The cognitive training for mild cognitive impairment had positive effect on memory, attention and executive function.•The beneficial effect was observed immediately after six-month training and confined to trained cognitive domains.•In the 12 months after training, training and control group had no difference in cognitive decline.•Functional neuroimaging showed increased regional activity at bilateral temporal poles, insular cortices and hippocampus.
