In this paper we briefly highlight relevant laboratory research that provided the theoretical and empirical underpinnings for the development of a task-analytic training methodology. The actual task-analytic methodology, developed to decompose tasks performed to support tactical command and control (C 2 ), air-weapons controller missions, is briefly discussed. The present paper provides the necessary background for the actual application of the methodology. The details of the direct application are presented in a companion paper by Eggemeier, Fisk, Robbins, and Lawless (1988).
