Abstract

Values for the electro-optic and second-harmonic-generation coefficients ${r}_{41}$ and ${d}_{14}(\mathrm{SHG})$ can be calculated from absolute spontaneous-Raman-scattering data alone. The ratio of electronic and lattice contributions to ${r}_{41}$, and the stimulated Raman gain coefficients for the LO and TO modes, may also be obtained. The technique is applied to GaAs and the value for ${r}_{41} [(1.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}12}\frac{\mathrm{m}}{\mathrm{V}}]$ agrees with direct measurements, while the value for ${d}_{14}(\mathrm{SHG}) [(1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}\frac{\mathrm{m}}{\mathrm{V}}]$ is within the range of some direct SHG measurements.
