A radical cyclization of benzene-tethered 1,7-enynes with aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates in the presence of copper(<sc>ii</sc>) acetate and DABCO˙(SO<sub>2</sub>)<sub>2</sub> is developed, leading to diverse benzo[<italic>j</italic>]phenanthridines.
