Abstract

Many excellent monographs on the spectra of dilute rare earth ions in solids have been produced during the past 20 years, a point which has not escaped the author of this monograph, which treads roughly the same path, though here and there different aspects are presented. The theoretical introduction is standard in its progression from a compact package of free ion theory into that for the crystal field.
