Extensive research into job satisfaction has been carried out in western countries, whereas hardly any research has been carried out in African countries. The purpose of this article is to examine the extent to which job satisfaction is experienced by secondary school teachers in Transkei. In a random sample of 124 teachers, responses to the questionnaire showed that they experienced job satisfaction to a significant degree. As further confirmation of this, the majority said teaching was congruent with their expectations prior to joining the profession. Moreover, they indicated that if they had their choice again they would certainly opt for teaching career. Job satisfaction is essential for morale, productivity, commitment and fulfilment
