Altered tumor cell implantation has been suggested as a mechanism explaining this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of laser ablation and standard electrosurgical resection on tumor implantation. Each of three requisite steps in tumor cell implantation was assayed in an animal model system. The number of viable tumor cells liberated during ablation of a standardized lesion was 620% greater in the electrosurgically resected group compared to the laser irradiated group. No difference was observed in the qualitative or quantitative patterns of cellular adherence to a fulguration bladder injury compared to a laser bladder injury. The number of cells adhering to an injury site was shown to increase as a function of the cell concentration to which it was exposed. There was no difference between groups in occurrence of tumor at the injury site following exposure to an equal number of tumor cells. This study has demonstrated marked differences between electroresection and laser ablation in terms of the number of viable cells released during the course of tumor removal. This data, together with the absence of injury site differences, suggests it may play a role in the clinically observed differences in tumor recurrence rates. © 1987 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByBROCKS C, BÜTTNER H and BöHLE A (2018) INHIBITION OF TUMOR IMPLANTATION BY INTRAVESICAL GEMCITABINE IN A MURINE MODEL OF SUPERFICIAL BLADDER CANCERJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 3, (1115-1118), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2005.BÖHLE A, JURCZOK A, ARDELT P, WULF T, ULMER A, JOCHAM D and BRANDAU S (2018) INHIBITION OF BLADDER CARCINOMA CELL ADHESION BY OLIGOPEPTIDE COMBINATIONS IN VITRO AND IN VIVOJournal of Urology, VOL. 167, NO. 1, (357-363), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2002.See W, Yong X, Crist S and Hedican S (2018) Diversity and Modulation of Plasminogen Activator Activity in Human Transitional Carcinoma Cell LinesJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 6, (1691-1696), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1994.See W (2018) Plasminogen Activators: Regulators of Tumor Cell Adherence to Sites of Lower Urinary Tract Surgical TraumaJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 3, (1024-1029), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1993.See W and Williams R (2018) Urothelial Injury and Clotting Cascade Activation: Common Denominators in Particulate Adherence to Urothelial SurfacesJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 3 Part 1, (541-548), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1992.See W, Rohlf D and Crist S (2018) In Vitro Particulate Adherence to Fibronectin: Correlation with in Vivo Particulate Adherence to Sites of Bladder InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 5, (1416-1423), Online publication date: 1-May-1992.Cooper C and See W (2018) The Impact of Iatrogenic Urothelial Trauma on Urinary Levels of Transforming Growth Factor-AlphaJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 6, (1647-1649), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1992.See W, Xia Q, Mcdermott T and Williams R (2018) Regional Chemotherapy Using Continuous Intravesical Infusion Doxorubicin for the Treatment of Muscle Invasive Transitional Cell Bladder Carcinoma in a Rat ModelJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 4, (1147-1152), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1991.
