Gastroent. 1974, 9, 377-381.In 20 clinically normal test subjects and 7 patients with histologically confirmed pancreatitis, the secretin-pancreozymin test was carried out after intubating the duodenum (with the Lagerlöf tube) and the stomach, and repeated 12-16 days later. After continuous intraduodenal instillation of radioactive vitamin B12, the recovery rates in the duodenal and gastric aspirates averaged 42.9% and 3.2% respectively. After i.v. stimulation with secretin, the enzyme output, initially raised as compared with the basal phase, rapidly decreased, whereas the enzyme production, increased during continuous secretin-pancreozymin infusion, remained virtually constant. In the secretin phase, the bicarbonate and trypsin outputs were reproducible in the clinically normal test subjects, the chymotrypsin output additionally being reproducible in patients with chronic pancreatitis. In the secretin-pancreozymin phase, the bicarbonate, trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase outputs of the first and second examination were almost identical in both groups.
