A group of 18 patients with mild to moderate hypertension, receiving 1.0 gm of chlorothiazide per day, were treated with 300 mg of allopurinol daily for a two-week period. A change-over design was employed in which a two-week period on placebo was substituted for allopurinol. The level of serum urate rose from 4.8 to 5.7 mg per 100 ml with chlorothiazide and placebo; this value was reduced to 3.5 with addition of allopurinol and was accompanied by an approximate decrease of 25 per cent in uric acid excretion.
