Abstract

[Abstract] The need for SPA is driven by a desire to build spacecraft in a dramatically reduced timescale. Since interfaces seem to account for many of the problems in integration, SPA provides a plug-and-play mechanism in which components describe their own functions through an electronic datasheet. As such, SPA provides a basis for self-organizing systems. The work in SPA follows two broad tracks: (1) satellite design automation and (2) plug-andplay components. PnP components use smart interfaces internally, based either on USB (SPA-U) or SpaceWire (SPA-S), though in principle any interface could be evolved to form a SPA-x interface. This talk will discuss the motivation for SPA, the roadmap, and current status of the research and development of SPA.
