The use of scaling techniques in sample surveys provides a way of introducing a “qualitative” dimension. However, the proper use of many scaling techniques requires a greater expenditure of time and money than is possible in most consumer surveys. A scaling technique is described here which provides an economical way of obtaining data comparable in many ways to those obtained by the semantic-differential technique.
