A study of the equation I = atb + b, where I = retention index and tb = boiling temperature (°C), for ethers, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and alcohols on 29 different stationary phases is performed. The influence of the stationary phase polarity and the functional group on values of a and b is discussed.
