In isolated rat diaphragm, insulin increased the metabolism of fructose and glucose via the hexokinase system but did not affect the utilization of fructose via the fructo-kinase pathway. The results suggest that insulin affects the metabolism of glucose and fructose by accelerating their initial phosphorylation by hexokinase.
