SUMMARY _ Long-term evaluation of 37 survivors of the idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome clearly showed complete recovery regardless of whether they were treated with high concentrations of oxygen and mechanical ventilation. Persistent radiographic changes were seen in 4 patients of the nonventilated group. Minor abnormalities of pulmonary function were found in the venti lated group. There was no increased incidence of respiratory infection in the survivors.
