Abstract

Since its inception a decade ago, the IEEE 1588 standard has progressed to include a number of new applications, including time and frequency transport over packet networks for telecommunication. Overcoming the challenges of precision time and frequency transfer over a vast variety of network configurations and possible loading conditions requires an in-depth knowledge of the packet timing conditions. Based on the hardware required for IEEE 1588 grandmasters and slaves, a precision packet measurement probe can be constructed to perform the necessary packet timing measurements. The analysis of packet timing measurement data, while drawing on traditional techniques, benefits from the application of new techniques. This paper, drawing on both laboratory and production packet network measurements, discusses probe equipment, playback network emulation equipment, and methods of packet timing analysis.
