Abstract We tried to prove the conversion of stearic acid into oleic acid by liver extracts. The method described by L E B RETON and co‐workers results in enzyme preparations from rat liver which decolorize methylenblue very rapidly but do not dehydrogenate stearic to oleic acid. After fractionation of liver cell particles in sucrose solution we were able to prove the existence of a dehydrogenase in the supernatant containing microsomes and cytoplasma, which converts 14 C stearic acid into oleic acid. The mytochondrial fraction showed no activity.
