Abstract

Abstract The neutral, colourless and optically inactive metabolite nonactin , C 40 H 64 O 12 , obtained from cultures of several Actinomyces strains, is a macrocyclic tetralactone (“ macrotetrolide ”) I of racemic nonactic acid, C 10 H 18 O 4 . The constitution II has been established for the latter by degradation. Crystallographic data for nonactin are reported.
