Abstract

As part of the Mexico Plan of Action, and with the Colombian conflict in the background, Latin American States adopted the idea of resettlement in solidarity in 2004, leading to the emergence of a new approach to a traditional durable solution. The idea has been translated into practice in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. Resettlement in solidarity is an idea in progress that, if successful, can lead to both a new approach to refugee protection in light of acute refugee crises and to a new model of dialogue among States and actors involved in refugee protection. An analytical assessment of its main ideas is therefore in order. This article thus examines a case study of resettlement in solidarity, focusing on Brazil, in order to ascertain whether, in the future, this new regional solution can be effective in establishing a more humane approach to resettlement and, thus, be in keeping with the most protective standards of human dignity.
