Estimates of average dietary iodine intake have been derived from thyroidal radioiodine uptakes conducted by 133 observers in approximately 30,000 euthyroid subjects throughout the United States. The average daily iodine intake in various sections of the United States varies from about 240 to 740 ng daily. Present-day regions of relatively lower intake in the northeast and northwest coincide approximately with those areas where endemic goiter has been found previously.
