Abstract The effect of time‐fluctuating electronic spins (magnetic fields) on the hyperfine splitting of the Mössbauer spectra is investigated. The author's previous formal theory, which utilizes the Liouville formalism due to Zwanzig, is briefly outlined and extended by considering relaxation effects in more detail. The solution for large times involves a superposition of frequency‐shifted Lorentzian lines with modified line widths. The frequency shift and the change in line width are obtained as functions of the nuclear spins, the magnetic quantum numbers, the magnetic moments, and of correlation functions defined in terms of the fluctuating spins.
