Biocompatible dextran-coated nanoceria (cerium oxide nanoparticles) are found to exhibit excellent, pH-dependent antioxidant properties (see image). They provide cytoprotection from free radicals to normal cells but not to cancer cells, and thus have potential applications in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory coatings for prosthetic devices and tissue engineering and in improved cancer therapeutics.
