Express order for oligosaccharides: A microbiological process for the synthesis of the carbohydrate portion of gangliosides GD3 and GT3 is described (see structure). Lactose and sialic acid are used as exogenous precursors by a metabolically engineered Escherichia coli strain that overexpresses the bifunctional sialyltransferase cstII gene from Campylobacter jejuni.
