Abstract

IN A prior report, Arscott et al. (1955), data were presented showing that barley may replace up to one-half of the ground grain component of a high-efficiency broiler ration fed to battery raised chicks provided such rations were fortified with 4 or 8 percent stabilized animal fat. It is the purpose of this paper to report further on this problem with emphasis at this time given to floor confined broilers fed varying amounts of barley and stabilized animal fat in mash or pellet form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Trial 1. Use of varying levels of animal fat, barley and corn: Experiments 1 and 2 consisted of seven lots of 250 Red Cornish × New Hampshire broilers confined to floor pens in a naturally ventilated building under electric hovers with a twelve hour lighting period to nine weeks of age. The experimental design of experiment 1 consisted of replacing corn with one-half or . . .
