Abstract

Abstract An investigation of methods for the extraction and analysis of lipids from human arteries is described. The analytical procedure developed has been tested for completeness of separation and absence of artefact formation. It can be applied to lipid mixtures amounting to as little as 50 mg or in some cases even less. The lipids can be separated into phospholipids, free fatty acids, sterol esters, and glycerides plus free sterols, and the fatty acid mixtures from these fractions analysed by gas chromatography after methylation. Examples of such analyses are given.
