Abstract

Postmodernism is currently influentialin educational theorising and has become a pervasive topic in the education literature. Definitions of postmodernism and practical prescriptions are said to be incompatible with a postmodern perspective (e.g. Usher and Edwards 1994). They are seldom offered. Nevertheless, in this paper I attempt to explore what is meant by postmodernism, highlighting the epistemological dimensions, and seek to develop a less philosophically problematic ‘post-postmodernist’ perspective. I also draw out the implications of my discussions for education, particularly for continuing education. These discussions will draw on, and are influenced by, the work of Wittgenstein.
