Theory and design algorithms, which account for the manufacturing cost and statistical manufacturing tolerance effects as well as the structural error, are presented for the synthesis of function generating mechanisms. The algorithms are illustrated in a planar, four-bar synthesis problem. The theory and associated algorithms may be applied to the synthesis of any planar or spatial function generating linkage.
