Lipases are enzymes that hydrolyse lipids into triglycerides and fatty acids. Due to the unique environment around their active site, they are capable of a wide range of racemic resolutions. This review article deals with the role of lipases in racemic resolutions with specific references to the stereospecificity, role of solvents and enzyme structure. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry
