A modified hook apparatus with nanosecond time resolution was used to measure the dispersion around the laser transitions in atomic copper vapor for both normal and inverted populations. A large discharge-produced population was found in the lower laser levels that could explain the lower-than-expected efficiency for copper-vapor lasers.
