The 14C carbonate method for the direct measure- ment of the synthesis rates of liver-produced plasma proteins (McFarlane, 1963) is a valuable new tecnnique for the study of protein metabolism in gastrointestinal diseases. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a study in which this technique has been applied to investigate the mechanism of the hypoproteinaemia and disordered protein metabolism which occur in the stagant loop syndrome.
