Abstract Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectra of the cell walls of three species of fungi are reported for the first time, namely (i) Agaricus bisporus , a fruiting bud, (ii) Mortierella genus and (iii) Mucor genus. Some molecular assignments are proposed for the major vibrational features and attributed to chitin, N ‐acetylglucosamine and ( R )‐glucan. Preliminary studies indicate that it is possible to use FT‐Raman spectroscopy to discriminate between different mixed species in culture media.
