Phenolic compounds from leaves of 20 varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were investigated employing thin-layer chromatography. Twenty spots out of a total of about 50 spots were selected as marker spots. Strong differences were observed with respect to the marker spots in the 20 varieties, which permitted a rough classification into two groups, designated as A and B. Varieties within Group A appear to have closer genetic affinity than varieties in Group B. In addition, a pedigree chart of the major past and presently cultivated Swedish barley varieties, including those investigated, is included.
