The theoretical and research literature in social work have paid little attention to the issue of long-term effectiveness of intervention. This article discusses the reasons and provides a new definition of therapeutic maintenance and a theoretical framework for examining and enhancing the durability of change. Empirically based practice principles that can be expected to promote lasting gains are highlighted. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.
