A spectrometer for the accurate measurement of x-ray powder diffraction line intensities and shapes is described. Monochromatic radiation is used, and the diffracted beam intensity is recorded by a Geiger counter. The intensity of the x-ray source is monitored continuously, and errors due to variations in its output are automatically compensated. The accuracy and resolution obtainable are demonstrated by some typical experimental results.
