Consumer Regulation of Nutrient Cycling

Abstract

Examples from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems illustrate that consumer activities alter nutrient cycling rates. Nutrients are translocated by migrations that cross system boundaries and by processes that mix soils and sediments. Transformation of substrates and prey communities change surface/volume ratios in ways that increase or decrease nutrient flux.
