Hepatic clearance of chylomicrons and chylomicron remnants appears to involve several steps: sequestration in the space of Disse, further lipolytic processing, and receptor-mediated internalization and degradation. The low-density lipoprotein receptor and possibly the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein may participate in this process. Apolipoprotein E is critically involved in mediating hepatic clearance and in some species the bone marrow also clears these lipoproteins.
