Abstract The influence of physisorbed water on the sulfidation of an ion exchanged CoNaY catalyst is studied by MÖSSBAUER EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY , EXTENDED X‐RAY FINE STRUCTURE AND THIOPHENE HDS ACTIVITY Hydrodesulfurization activity measurements. Physisorbed water present during sulfidation affects the Co‐sulfide dispersion and the initial HDS activity. Its removal prior to sulfidation clearly results in an improvement of these two catalyst parameters.
