Ultrafine, nearly spherical particles of CoFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/ were prepared under mild hydrothermal conditions. These ferrite particles were found to be superparamagnetic with a narrow particle size distribution in the range 10.0-40.0 nm. The hydrothermal ferrite powders could be sintered to almost theoretical density with little or no intergranular porosity. The present study shows that magnetic measurements together with Mossbauer spectroscopy provide excellent tools for characterizing fine ferrite particles at macroscopic levels.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
