Abstract Functional aphasiology is arguably in crisis. Increasing pressure on measurement of functional communication, in the context of the medical marketplace, is highlighting clinical inadequacies and theoretical disarray (Frattali 1992). There is perceived to be an urgent need for theoretical cohesion and consistency of clinical procedures. The consequences of failure to establish a clear focus for functional assessment constitute a threat to the survival of the profession.
