Abstract This review article presents a systematic collection of results from the facile and elegant method called the Gewald synthesis, which leads to the synthesis of 2-aminothiophenes. The present review illustrates the details of the Gewald synthesis with reference to its simplicity, superiority and advantages over other existing methods.
