An analytical model of saturation NRZ recording is used to calculate transition lengths in media with hysteresis curves which are not square. The maximum gradient of transition magnetization is computed, including the field gradients of the major hysteresis curve and the spatial gradients of the recording‐head field and transition demagnetization fields, by assuming the transition has an arctangent shape. The model is an approximation to, and is compared with, numerical self‐consistent analyses.
