:This article chronicles the American Society for Engineering Management's efforts to improve the quality of graduate education in engineering management by establishing standards (or expectations) and certifying those engineering management programs that meet and/or exceed these standards. This article covers the period during which the certification standards were developed, the period of the pilot program to test the certification standards and the certification process, the establishment of the College of Engineering Management Certification, the ongoing activity of this body as well as the process for certification itself.
