As it approaches its sixth birthday, Public Understanding of Science is about to undergo its first major rite of passage. Ownership of the journal will continue to rest with IOP Publishing and the Science Museum, London; but, rightly and inevitably, the change of editorship will bring with it changes of balance, of emphasis and of style.
