Theoretical Carbohydrates Requirement for Alfalfa Silage Production¹

Abstract

Synopsis Approximately 0.13% carbohydrate is required for ensilage production, assuming no buffering action. Buffer systems between inorganic ions and organic acids produced by fermentation increase this requirement to 6 or 7%. The availability of these ions is reduced by wilting of the crop.
