Abstract Icosahedral quasiperiodic crystals of the Al85Si1Mn14system have been prepared by rapid quenching from the melt. Thermal analysis measurements, electrical resistivity and neutron thermodiffractometry have shown that the alloy transforms into conventional crystals in a two-step mechanism producing first the 0-Al6Mn phase and then small amounts of cubic α-AlMnSi. The stability of the i-phase is related to surface energy effects, and the crystallization is controlled by the diffusion at the (i-phase)-(f.c.c.-Al) interfaces. Evidence is reported that the Mn subnetwork of the i-phase is the skeleton of the structure. Consistency with models is discussed.
