A new Lactobacillus isolated from dried cow dung using a medium containing xylose as a sole carbon source is described. The strains of the species are heterofermentative, contain meso-diaminopimelic acid in cell wall peptidoglycan, and actively ferment pentoses more than hexoses. Heterofermentative lactobacilli which contain meso-diaminopimelic acid in cell wall peptidoglycan have not been reported so far and, therefore, the isolate should be classified into a new species and was named Lactobacillus vaccinostercus KOZAKI and OKADA sp. nov.
