Abstract Facilitating successful access to special events is key to their success, yet a transport and events research agenda is still to emerge and transport is often peripheral to the tourism destination management literature. This paper uses a conceptual framework to analyse the transport implications of holding special events. The paper concludes with comment on where and when it is best to host events from a transport perspective and mechanisms to facilitate more sustainable travel choices to events within destination areas. The paper prepares the ground for further analysis and develops a future agenda for research. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
