Abstract The shifts in the CS stretching vibration caused by various substituents in thiobenzophenone are so small that no good correlations between substituent constants and absorption frequencies is found. Differences between the n.m.r. spectra of thiobenzophenones and benzophenones can be explained with the aid of conformations deduced from the electronic spectra.
